Celebrities are throwing "designer" into the career mix by creating their own line of handbags, clothing, accessories, and shoes.
In an industry where actors become singers, singers become actors and reality show stars are “somebodies”, it’s no surprise when celebrities add “designer” to their resume as well. Everyone from blogger Perez Hilton to Lindsey Lohan and Sheryl Crow has a new line of clothing or accessories debuting in stores around the country.
Maternity Chic
- Milla Jovovich- The Resident Evil star has had a clothing line, Jovovich-Hawk, with friend Carmen Hawk for 13 years. When Jovovich had her first child in November 2007, she told People she had some great ideas for maternity wear but wasn’t incorporating it into her line just yet.

Young Adult/Teen Lines
- Avril Lavigne has designed a clothing line inspired by her own style that department store Kohl’s carries. The line is called Abbey Dawn and Lavigne describes it as “rock-glam”. Lavigne tells Us Weekly, “Everything is fit to be sexy and flattering.” She also stresses the point that she’s very hands-on throughout the whole process, from picking fabrics to actually designing the look of the clothes.
- Lauren Conrad, or “LC” from “The Hills”, designed a line for popular celebrity boutique Kitson. Her designs were simple but trendy. Her line, Lauren Conrad Collection, is full of bubble dresses, asymmetrical necklines and bright colors. However, Kitson recently dropped her label from their stores due to poor sales. Conrad’s design recognition may be getting a boost, however. She has been asked to design the dress, or dresses, being worn by the “trophy girls” at the Emmy’s in September.

Handbags & Shoes
- Jessica Simpson debuted a line of shoes in early 2006. The line featured chunky soled sandals, platform wedges and thick-heeled boots. Simpson will be expanding her empire in the next year by adding a dress collection and a line of lingerie called Jessica Simpson Intimates. Simpson said she’s excited about her upcoming line of dresses that will be made of “distinctive fabrics and silhouettes” that mimic her own personal style.
- Camilla Alves, better known as Matthew McConaughey’s baby-mama, is the designer of the handbag line Muxo. The bags are inspired by the two places she’s spent most of her life, Brazil and New York. Along with her mother, Alves hand-makes each bag so they’re all one-of-a-kind creations. Alves says she started the line because “there weren’t any handbags available that were strong enough but sexy and the same time.
